 Mathura or Brajbhoomi is known to be the birth place of Lord Krishna, an important deity in the Hindu mythology. It is one of the seven sacred cities of India and an important Hindu pilgrim too. This divine city has an amazing collection of picturesque ghats and numerous floating diyas in the evening makes them look more spectacular. Vrindavan, the celebrated town is as closely connected with Krishna as Mathura itself. It is known to be the place where Krishna performed his famous romantic and sportive roles. . This place has various temples dating from 1590 but the most important one is Govinda Deva. Mathura is not just a land of temples but also a great center of Buddhism. In this museum stands a powerful, notable Bodhisttava, dating from the Kushana period. It claims to have the honor of having produced the first images of Buddha. Manasi Ganga Kunda is usually the starting and the end point of the Govardhana Hill. This kunda is said to be more sacred than the Ganges River, because bathing in this one achieves "Krishna Prema" ie love of Krishna. Another popular temple is the Dwarkadeesh Temple. This temple was built in 1814; it is the main temple in the town. During the festive days of Holi, Janmashthami and Diwali, it is decorated ostentatiously. Visit the beautiful Kusuma Sarovara which is a 460-feet-long lake and historians say that gopis were used to pick flowers from here for Krishna. Jawahir Singh built the ghatas at this kunda around 1764. On the outskirts of the city is the Gita Mandir. The temple carving and painting are major attractions.
