Temples of North India


Temples of North IndiaIndia has always been a center for spirituality and mysticism. The entire scape of India is dotted with temples, the places of religious worship for Hindus, one of the prime religions followed in India.

The famous temples of North India include-

Birla Mandir - also known as the Laxmi Narayan Temple this temple is dedicated to Laxmi - the goddess of wealth and Narayan - the preserver. Gandhiji himself inaugurated the temple but he laid down the condition that the temple should be open to the people of all castes and faiths. The temple has towers ranging from 116 feet to 165 feet. The Geeta Bhawan, one of the halls is adorned with scenes from the Indian mythology.

The ISKCON Temples - The ISKCON stands for International Society for Krishna Consciousness, a movement that was started by Swami Prabhupada. The ISKCON temples are a set of complex of temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. There are 40 ISKCON temples in India. The temples are home to beautiful paintings by Russian artists of the past with the subjects of Radha Krishna, Sita, Ram, Laxman, Hanuman and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Attending a Kirtan, Aarti, Pravachan and Prasadam are an enriching experience.

Akshar Dham - the Akshar Dham is a splendidly designed monument with 73 ornately patterned and 63 partially carved pillars. The temple is situated on a vast expanse of 23 acres dotted with shrines, sculptures, lakes and even rides. The Akshar Dham is grand in scale- it's a 10 storied monument made of pink sandstone of Rajasthan.

The place is a sheer visual delight with its beautifully sculpted pillars and intricately carved windows.

Naina Devi Temple - this beautiful temple is located in the scenic locales of Nainital.
The temple is said to have a mythological connection. Legend has it that, there used to be a devotee of Goddess Durga named Naina who built this temple since goddess appeared in his dream.

Temples of North IndiaDilwara Temples - these magnificently crafted temples are situated in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. The temples display a striking artistry in the usage of marble. These are a set of 5 temples having exquisitely designed ceilings, doorways and pillars. The temples are set amidst the beautiful surroundings of the mango trees and hills form the backdrop. These temples are a sacred pilgrimage center for the Jains.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple - the holy city of Varanasi is home to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Kashi finds a mention in the holy scriptures of the Hindus, the Puranas, Upanishads and the Brahmanas. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Temple complex also houses a University, which is famous for its Sanskrit, Philosophy and Arts faculties. A major attraction is the Vishweshwara jyotirlinga, famous for its spiritual significance.
