Situated atop the palace is the Victory Tower, which was built to mark the victory of Ladakh over the armies of Balti Kashmir. The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa was built in the 1430. It houses a Buddha image, which is three storeys high. Kargil is a beautiful valley with its line up of green meadows and orchards of apricot. Infact Kargil is also known as the valley of apricots. It is also an important trading center where you can pick up souvenirs. The Nubra Valley is a quaint valley where you can take walks along the countryside soaking its immense silences and splendor. The administrative center of the Valley is Diskit. Near the Valley on the outskirts of Panamik you can find hot springs, which are soothing and healing in the chilly climes of Ladakh. For having a look at crystal blue waters head for Tso Moriri Lake, which is situated amidst massifs of mountains.
The Spirit of Buddhism
The entire scape of Ladakh is dotted with monasteries. The famous Buddhist monasteries include the Hemis Monastery which is the largest monastery of Ladakh famous for the huge painting of Buddha it houses, but it is displayed to the public only once in 11 years. It houses about 150 lamas. A monastery, which is famous for its beautiful architecture, is the Thiksey monastery. The oldest gompas of Ladakh are Alchi, Likir and Lamayuru dating 1000 to 1100 years back in time. The devotion of Buddhism doesn't know any bounds here so interestingly Kargil is home to a cave monastery in the village of Shergol.
For those who want to meditate here is a retreat in the higher ranges of Zanskar range by the name of Urgyan Dzong. Another important retreat for meditation is the Lamayuru Monastery.
Adventure Activities
Ladakh has a perfect landscape for the adventure lovers. You can do trekking at the Zanskar range or the Himalayan Wall range. The valley of Kargil also provides excellent avenues for trekking, mountaineering, camping and river rafting.
