The fair takes place during the kartik poornima(full moon) in the month of November each year. The people meet to trade cattle, camels, goat, sheep, clothes, jewellery and spices. The fair comes to an end after a period of 10 days full of activities of trading, camel racing and festivities after which everybody takes a holy dip in the lake on the night of full moon. The fair sees the coming of about 2,00,000 people every year.
Once you are through absorbing the holy and colorful spirit of the place you can head for Udaipur, the city of Palaces. The famous palaces here include
City Palace - The city Palace overlooks the beautiful Lake Pichola. Walking through this huge palace you will realize the sheer scale of luxury and grandeur that the kings enjoyed. Infact, there was a custom at the palace that the king would weigh himself against gold and silver, under the Tripolia or the triple Gate, which would later on be distributed amongst the local populace. Witness the marvels of mirror tiles and paintings in the beautifully designed rooms for the royalty.
Lake Palace - This palace is set amidst the sapphire waters of the Lake Pichola. Maharana Jagjit Singh founded the Palace. The rulers used this palace as their summer resort. The rooms are adorned with pink stones, green lotus leaves and painted mirrors enhancing their beauty.
On your way back from Udaipur you can visit the Pink City, Jaipur, which is home to several forts and palaces. Chief attractions include-
Jaigarh Fort - This imposing fort is built atop a hill. This Fort displays impressive work of military architecture as the Rajput rulers used it as a treasury. The chief attractions here include the Jaivan, the largest cannon on wheels.
Amber Fort - This fort's architecture has motifs from Rajput and Mughal architecture. Man Singh I started the construction of this Fort however it was finished by Jai Singh I. The Fort has an imposing exterior yet it is adorned with artistic work on the inside. The walls have paintings, carvings, mosaic and mirror work. The picturesque Maota Lake in the foreground adds to the splendor of the Fort.
Hawa Mahal - Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built this stunning work of architecture in the year 1799. The Mahal is a five-storied building, with several windows. The idea behind this was that the royal ladies could see the processions as well as ongoings on the street without being seen themselves. The building is made of pink and red sandstone
