Nizamuddin's Tomb


Nizamuddin's TombThe Nizamuddin's Tomb is the shrine of a Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliyaa or Nizam-ud-Din who was the fourth saint in the Chisti order. Muhammad Tughluq built the tomb. The sacred shrine draws people from all over the world. Once inside the shrine it is necessary to cover one's heads and shoulders. Walking in this area itself is like a walk back in time. A fascinating aspect about the place is that every Thursday a performance of qawwali singers takes place after the evening prayers. Twice during the year, on the death anniversaries of Hazrat Nizamuddin and his disciple Amir Khusrau, a fair is held. The fair sees pilgrims from all over the country come together. The religious fervor and the fervor of the qawwali singers is a sight to be seen on any of the festivals or the fairs.

Due to the popularity of this sacred shrine several shops that have sprung up in the vicinity of the area selling flowers, head covers and incenses. You'll also encounter some Sajjadah-nashins or keepers of the mausoleum, requesting money for their blessings. The shrine is situated quite close to the Nizamuddin Railway station as well as Humayun's Tomb.

The Tomb consists of a square chambers surrounded by lawns. The beautiful dome is adorned with the vertical stripes of black marble and bejeweled by a lotus. The mausoleum also has a prayer hall known as Jamaat-Khana.

There is the Hujra-e-Qadeem, a room guarded by a heavy wooden door that is also opened during the gathering of the Sufis. There are claims that the room was constructed in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The wall outside this room is adorned with a poem done in calligraphy, which is an ode to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliyaa.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliyaa was born in the year 1236 and he died in the year 1325. He was the disciple of the famous saint Shaikh Farid Shakarganj, who later appointed him as his successor. The followers of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliyaa included Ala-ud-Din Khalji and Muhammad Tughluq.

The favorite disciple of Nizamuddin, Amir Khusrau is also buried in the Nizamuddin's Tomb. Amir Khusrau is famous for his works in Urdu poetry as well as founding a type of north Indian Classical Music known as khyal. There are a large number of people from royalty buried here like the daughter of Shah Jahan, Jahan Ara Begum and the famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. Within the Nizamuddin area is Ghalib Academy, having a museum and a library having a large collection of his works.
