Bahai Temple

Bahai TampleThe Bahai (or the Lotus temple) is based on the Bahai beliefs and attracts people from all across the world. It is located in Kalkaji in South Delhi.

Heritage

The Bahai Temple is an ode to the Bahai faith that believes in the presence of one God- the creator of the earth. The splendid architecture of the place echoes in unison with the faith of this religion. Fariborz Sahba, an architect of Iranian origin, has designed the temple. The house of worship has been designed in a way that it has three layers of nine petals. Every layer stems from the platform, which raises the building above the plains. The first two layers curve on the inside meeting the dome and the third layer curves on the outside. The Temple forms a beautiful sight of a huge white lotus. The petals of the temple are made up of white concrete cast. The splendid dome of the temple forms the innermost portion of the lotus and is a magnificent sight to look at. The temple is surrounded on the outside by nine reflecting pools symbolizing the lotus petals. The Bahai worship follows the same style world over with nine petals and a central dome symbolic of the inherent diversity and oneness.

The Temple

The temple doesn't have any religious icons but copies of scriptures. One can meditate in the silence of the hall. According to the faith, meditation and prayer are the chief ways of improving the human soul. The Bahai temple has attracted many visitors from all over the world since its inception in 1986. The Bahai temple is surrounded by a well-maintained garden with beautiful flowers adorning it.

The act of praying is described as a conversation with god. The Bahai religion doesn't have any preachers to teach the religion but the answers according to the religion lie in the prayers and meditation. The devotional programs consist of reading of prayers, scriptures of the Bahai as well as other world faiths and meditation. The religion doesn't promote any rituals, any superstitions or ceremonies.

The Religion

The Temple is open to all the faiths. The religion is broad in its scope and outlookand propagates oneness and unity of all the people in the world. The Bahai religion is one of the youngest religions of the world. Worldwide it enjoys a following of over 5 million people. The Bahai international Community has been recognized as an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) since the year 1948.
